Moving on

Thank you for following the Trio blog.  If you'd like to continue reading about the adventures of Franny, Cole, and Delaney, please check us out at http://fcdtrio.wordpress.com/.  I don't know if this will be a permanent change, but one that I am pursuing at this time.

Also, for the safety of my family, I am going to be making the blog private.  While the blog has always been intended for friends and family, I do know there are a few others that follow the Trio blog.  Those of  you who would like to continue to follow once the blog is made private, please contact me through this blog.

Fireworks

This 4th of July, we purchased a few fireworks for the kids to enjoy.  Nothing big--a few smoke bombs, Screaming Willies, spinners, and sparklers.  All the kids--and especially Cole--loved them!  When they're older, we'll have them stay up late to watch the big fireworks, but for now, these were just perfect!

4th of July

The kids love celebrating the 4th of July at Auntie Noelle's house--they talk about it almost all year round, and it's a very big deal!  Which isn't surprising--the parade, a very yummy picnic, and fun in the sprinkler were just the highlights of this year's super fun celebration.  The kids had an incredible time!

Sleep-over with her BFF

This weekend, Franny had her first ever sleep-over at her friend Megan's house.  It could not have gone any easier--the two went to bed, read their Justice and American Girl catalogs, and then fell asleep with their American Girls.  The next morning, they woke up happy and played well into the afternoon. She had the best time!  She was sad to leave, and am certain she would have been perfectly happy to stay another night!  These two have been friends their entire lives, but it is just recently that they have become BFFs (best friends forever).  The joy that I see Franny have with this friendship is very sweet; she loves her siblings but there is something very special about a friend at this age that she can have fun with and that likes the same things she does.  This was a big deal for Franny, and I am so happy that it could not have gone any better.  It was perfect!

Safety Town

Cole has spent the last two weeks at Safety Town Camp.   I am very impressed with this program, and the experience they provide the kids.  Every day the kids learn valuable information about different types of safety--police and pedestrians, bike and car, home fire, strangers, animals, water, poison, and personal safety.  Everything is presented in a way that kids find fun--songs, puppet shows, art and activities, and uniformed officers. 

On Friday, the kids' final day was all about fun.  There were four different police vehicles that the kids could climb in, check out the computers and cameras, and talk to the officers.  Then, they had a short graduation ceremony where they received certificates and sang their safety songs for parents and guests.      I think Cole had fun in his camp, and I know he was very pleased with the graduation--especially having his sisters and grandparents there!  It was a great way to conclude his two weeks of Safety Town.

Things that matter

I am a strong proponent for choosing battles wisely--that is, ones that I have the energy for and ones that matter.  Interestingly, what I felt mattered with Franny when she was three years old doesn't necessarily carry over to what I feel matters with Delaney at the same age.

I would never have allowed Franny to wear her dance leotard out and about for errands.  I also would never have let her bring a toy out of the car into the outside world.  And, as I look at this picture of Delaney, taken on our way to pick up Cole from camp, I have to admit I probably would have also insisted on pulling her hair back (since she needs her hair cut) and I'm not sure if I would have let her wear those shoes.  

But, this is Delaney, not Franny.  It's not that I'm necessarily more relaxed with her, I just don't have the same perception of what really matters.  She chooses what she wears and there are very few cases where I will override her.  And yes, we do get some looks from time to time.  But again, that's not something that I think matters, anymore.  And, she may lose her horse or accidentally leave it behind, and if she did that's okay--it would be a great learning opportunity for her.  As for the hair, I don't even try, as I can't possibly win that one.  

I know limits and structure are important to kids, and my kids have plenty of appropriate ones.  But, fortunately I am a little wiser, as well.  Lucky Delaney!

Baking with the kids

While Franny was spending some one-on-one time with her grandparents, Cole, Delaney, and I took our way-too-ripe bananas and made banana bread.   It was a lot of mess, a lot of fun, and a lot of attempted tasting.  After explaining the 'no fingers in the batter' rule way too many times, they finally got their chance.  Once the bread was in the oven, they were free to taste what remained in the bowl as much as they liked.  And, they maximized it, for sure!

Sleeping bag for Bug

 For her birthday, Delaney was fortunate to be given very thoughtful gifts.  Among them was this Tinkerbell sleeping bag from her grandparents.  She has played with it every day and has slept in it every night since her birthday.  She twists and turns in all sorts of positions when she sleeps, so I was trying to persuade her to go back to sleeping with her blanket, but she was insistent about sleeping in her new sleeping bag.  It's hard to predict what is going to be a big deal to a three year old, but this is definitely it!

Fathers Day

On Fathers Day we all wanted to plan an outing for Rick to let him know how special he is to all of us. Franny's idea was a hike, which everyone was into, especially since we haven't done one for quite a while.  We had high hopes for a hike on the Gorge, but the morning got away from us and we headed out to Tryon Creek State Park instead.  But, everyone still had a great time with a picnic lunch and the hike.  And, most importantly, we were able to wish Rick a happy Fathers Day and let him know how much we love him and appreciate all he does for us.  We are very blessed!

The cake

The pictures don't do this beautiful cake justice.  It was incredible!  The hand-made fondant flowers and leaves were so detailed and shimmery.  Pixie Hollow couldn't have produced a better cake!  Thank you Auntie Noelle!!!
