Fireworks

Posted by Trina Rae Thursday, July 5, 2012 0 comments

This 4th of July, we purchased a few fireworks for the kids to enjoy.  Nothing big--a few smoke bombs, Screaming Willies, spinners, and sparklers.  All the kids--and especially Cole--loved them!  When they're older, we'll have them stay up late to watch the big fireworks, but for now, these were just perfect!

4th of July

The kids love celebrating the 4th of July at Auntie Noelle's house--they talk about it almost all year round, and it's a very big deal!  Which isn't surprising--the parade, a very yummy picnic, and fun in the sprinkler were just the highlights of this year's super fun celebration.  The kids had an incredible time!

Baking with the kids

While Franny was spending some one-on-one time with her grandparents, Cole, Delaney, and I took our way-too-ripe bananas and made banana bread.   It was a lot of mess, a lot of fun, and a lot of attempted tasting.  After explaining the 'no fingers in the batter' rule way too many times, they finally got their chance.  Once the bread was in the oven, they were free to taste what remained in the bowl as much as they liked.  And, they maximized it, for sure!

Sleeping bag for Bug

For her birthday, Delaney was fortunate to be given very thoughtful gifts.  Among them was this Tinkerbell sleeping bag from her grandparents.  She has played with it every day and has slept in it every night since her birthday.  She twists and turns in all sorts of positions when she sleeps, so I was trying to persuade her to go back to sleeping with her blanket, but she was insistent about sleeping in her new sleeping bag.  It's hard to predict what is going to be a big deal to a three year old, but this is definitely it!

Fathers Day

On Fathers Day we all wanted to plan an outing for Rick to let him know how special he is to all of us. Franny's idea was a hike, which everyone was into, especially since we haven't done one for quite a while.  We had high hopes for a hike on the Gorge, but the morning got away from us and we headed out to Tryon Creek State Park instead.  But, everyone still had a great time with a picnic lunch and the hike.  And, most importantly, we were able to wish Rick a happy Fathers Day and let him know how much we love him and appreciate all he does for us.  We are very blessed!

The cake

The pictures don't do this beautiful cake justice.  It was incredible!  The hand-made fondant flowers and leaves were so detailed and shimmery.  Pixie Hollow couldn't have produced a better cake!  Thank you Auntie Noelle!!!

A Tinkerbell party!

This weekend, Delaney had her long-awaited Tinkerbell party!  She has waited and waited, watched Franny and Cole have their parties, and finally Saturday was her big day.  It was wonderful to see what a big deal it all was to her.  From seeing her gorgeous cake decorated by Auntie Noelle, to opening presents and celebrating with family, as well as her best friend Audrey, Delaney had the time of her life!  There was no question she knew it was her special day, and she loved it.  And, to top it off, it was warm enough to set up the pool!  It was a perfect party for this very special little girl.

Last day of school!

Today was the last day of school for both Franny and Cole.  They both had great years, worked very hard, and are looking forward to some much-deserved free time, as well as a couple of camps.  And, as much as they are both thrilled about their breaks, Delaney is going to be just as happy--if not more--when she realizes her two best friends are going to home all summer!

Playmates

For the last couple of months, Delaney has been enjoying weekly playdates with a sweet neighbor girl. They are just a few months apart, so the two get along really well.  Being the oldest, she has introduced Delaney to some things that girls do at their age that Delaney has never done, and Delaney has introduced her to some things that girls do if they have an older sister!  It's been a fun relationship to watch develop.  This week, we went on a little hike here in the neighborhood, walked down to the creek and threw some rocks off the bridge, and then walked home.  A simple, little outing, but very fun for Delaney who loves playing with her friend!

School Carnival

The kids had a great time at Franny's school carnival last Friday.  They all had their hair painted, and Cole even had his spiked up in a mohawk--very unlike him!  They had pizza, played games--including an Angry Birds game--jumped around in the bounce house, and rode the train.  Franny spent most of her time with her best friend Lily, while Cole and Delaney explored the carnival together.  I spent a crazy 45 minutes making cotton candy at my volunteer station...it is harder than it looks!  But, it was a great evening for everyone, and it was probably the first big event that makes everyone realize the last day of school is fast approaching.  What a great year it has been!

Yaquina Bay State Park

For Cole's birthday, we stayed at a condo right on Yaquina Bay.  It was wonderful to wake up to the beautiful view of the bay, and the kids loved staying right on the marina and seeing all the boats docked.  After spending the morning there, we moved on to Yaquina Bay State Park.  Unfortunately, the lighthouse was closed, but the kids had a great time on the beach and running down the dunes and crashing into the sand.  They could have stayed there all day!

Oregon Coast Aquarium

We wanted to do a special excursion trip for Cole's birthday, like we did for Franny when we took her to the American Girl store.  Cole's choice was to go to the aquarium in Newport, and then to OSU for bowling.  We set aside one day to make the trip and see the aquarium.  He had a great time, although I'm not sure how much of the aquarium he actually saw.  But, he thought it was great because it was his special birthday trip, and even more so when he found out that Grandma and Grandpa were joining us!  For Cole, it was the best way to spend his first day as a five year old!

In the cool of the pool

This week, Rick brought home a new, inflatable pool for the kids.  They had been asking for one, and given they have more or less outgrown the wading pool and water table, it made sense.  Although it was barely 70 degrees today, the kids still insisted on an inaugural dip in the pool.  It was a huge hit--they did somersaults, cartwheels, handstands, and cannonballs, and didn't get out until their teeth were chattering!  The kids love their down days at the house, so I know this pool is going to get a lot of use in the upcoming months.
