Playdate

Since starting preschool, Cole has had a number of friends, but he has never really clicked with anyone special.  Until now.  For the last two weeks, Cole and this little girl have been inseparable.  As soon as they see each other they give each other a big hug and run off holding hands.  They are incredibly sweet together.  This week, I set up a playdate for them.  I wasn't sure if they would get along as well (especially after spending four hours together at school) but they did really great.  I didn't want to intrude on their time together, so this is the best picture I could discreetly take.  Cole really wanted to give her something, and tried to give her a number of his toys, but thankfully her mom made sure they stayed with Cole.  I told him he could find a special gift or make a card, but that didn't really satisfy him.  I think he wanted to give her something of his.  I am looking forward to seeing how this friendship develops in the upcoming weeks.  She is definitely special to him and I loved this opportunity to be able to get a closer glimpse at the two in action.

Halloween sneak-peek

Franny and Cole’s costumes arrived today, and they were so excited to try them on!  I think they were a hit—Cole didn’t want to take his off and Franny wore her ruby slippers until she went to bed!

Dragonflies

Cole is settling into his third week in his Pre-K classroom.  Although he has always enjoyed school, it has never been his favorite thing.  Because of that, I was a little concerned that he wouldn't adjust to his new three day week and the ramped up academic focus.  His preschool classroom definitely had similar subjects and school work, but not at the same level and definitely not with the same expectations.  But, he is responding really well to his new environment.  He really likes the tennis and Mandarin classes, and his teachers are really wonderful.  This past week, we even have started to spend about 15 minutes a day on homework, which he has tolerated, much to my surprise!  And, even though it's not his favorite thing to do, just those 15 minutes have already resulted in significant improvements in his writing.  We don't make a big deal about the homework, as I really want to keep school fun for him, but I am really proud of his efforts and results.  I am excited to see how his year progresses--I think it's going to be a great one!

He's a boy.

Girls and boys are different.  Without encouragement, Franny has always been drawn to pink and purple, ladybugs and butterflies, princesses, and kittens and puppies.  It's just the way she is, which parallels almost every other little girl I know.  Then there is Cole.  He loves cars and trucks, sticks, digging in the dirt, pirates, dragons, tools, and superheroes.  Which, is just like every little boy I know.  The superheroes attraction I find somewhat curious.  He has never seen a Spiderman or Ironman episode, yet he has gone through phases where they are his prime focus.  And, while preschool and his friends must have some influence, I am still amazed at how much he is drawn to them.  His latest favorite is Batman. (Sweet Cole called him 'Butt Man' for months, before I just couldn't take it anymore and I had to correct him.)  Last week, he even insisted on being called Batman!  His new playmate at school is a little girl named Nikki, and they have their own game they created where he is Batman and she is Bat Lady.  It really cracks me up.  I don't know what the next phase will be for Cole, but I am sure it will be something very boyish that I haven't experienced yet.  Ah, the joy of boys!

A head start

I think Franny has been talking about our upcoming Halloween since November 1st of last year.  We typically don't even start thinking about costumes or preparations until just a few weeks before, but this year both Franny and Cole were very adamant about the costumes they wanted, and had been for long enough that I decided to just get their costumes ordered.  They were both very excited, and their attention turned to what Delaney was going to be for Halloween.  So, I suggested we pull out all the kids' old costumes and see if there was something that she would like.  Needless to say, this quickly progressed into getting out all the Halloween decorations--something I usually hold out on until about 10 days preceding the big day.  It's not that I'm not festive, I just don't like all the extra things out on every surface imaginable.  But, I couldn't bear to squash their enthusiasm, so our decorations are now up just days before the beginning of October.  But, it actually has been fun--we've been reading Halloween books and there are pumpkins, black cats, and little orange lights throughout our house.  Maybe with this head start we will actually get to some of those things we always seem to run out of time for!  May the Halloween festivities begin!

Late opening

Once a month, Franny’s school has a two-hour late opening.  It was a nice day, so we decided to have some fun snacks at Starbucks and then walk to school.  Because it is a neighborhood school, there are a lot of kids that walk, so it was fun to be a part the scene.  The first Wednesday of each month is “Waste Less and Walk Wednesday” where kids are encouraged to walk to school and bring a waste-free lunch. It really isn’t possible for us to walk on a regular school day, so we’ve never been able to participate in the walking part, but this was a nice alternative.  Franny had a good time walking, and Delaney did a great job going up what is a fairly long and steep hill.  I think we’re all hoping we get to do it again next month!

Here comes the rain again

Posted by Trina Rae Sunday, September 18, 2011 0 comments

This weekend was a wet one.  The kids all really wanted to stay home, so we went into our inside routine.  We read books, did puzzles, and drew pictures; our couch became a pirate ship and the hall closet became their hotel for whatever destination it was they were ‘visiting’.  But, Franny, Cole, and Delaney just weren’t ready to retreat inside for the duration of the weekend.  On both Saturday and Sunday, they wanted to play outside—even in the rain.  They rode their bikes and scooters and did everything they would do in the sunshine.  Only Delaney was a little sensitive to the rain, and came to sit with me in the garage when it was really coming down.  It was definitely a reminder that Fall is fast approaching and we need to savor every ray of sunshine we see in the upcoming weeks!

The stand-in

Tonight, Delaney rode this horse around and around the house while saying ‘go horsie, go horsie!’ .  The horse’s name? Gator.  No surprise there—I think she must be anxious to get back on her favorite horse and go for a real ride!

Trying new things

Posted by Trina Rae Thursday, September 15, 2011 0 comments

Delaney’s skills are developing at a rapid pace right now.  Everyday she is doing new things and saying new things and working extremely hard to do it.  Today, Cole and Franny were stringing beads with Auntie Noelle, during which time, Delaney dropped beads on the floor (on purpose), and dumped them in and out of their container.  But, once Franny and Cole moved on, Delaney scooted over next to Auntie, picked up a string and started trying to make her own string of beads.  At first, she didn’t have much success, but within just a short time she was stringing them easily.  Her petite little face clearly showed her intense concentration, which she maintained for an extensive time period.  She is developing so quickly, I sometimes forget to give her the opportunity to do more new things.  Fortunately, there are days like today where she takes matters into her own hands!

One of the gang

Delaney may be nearly two years younger than most of the others in the kids’ playgroup, but she definitely loves.  She talks about the other kids, tries to talk to and play with the other kids, and really gets in and participates in whatever everyone is doing.  Today, the kids went to Big Al’s for bowling.  She got her own shoes, her own ball, and played a really good game.  But, most importantly, she was super proud of doing all of it!  With another round of kindergartners starting school next year, I’m not sure how much longer this playgroup will endure.  But, I do hope long enough for this little girl to join in on all the fun she witnessed for her first two years!

Copycat

Recently, Delaney has started to mimic everything that Franny—and to some extent, Cole—does and says.  Tonight at dinner, Franny was eating her nectarine stuck on a fork like a caramel apple.  (She does this so her hands don’t get all sticky.)   After watching Franny, it took Delaney all of about one minute to stick her apple on her fork to finish eating it.  I saw this same sort of behavior from Cole, but not quite to this extent.  Someday, when they are teenagers fighting over something silly, I’ll have to make a point of reminding Delaney how there was a time when she wanted to be just like Franny!

Running Team

Today was Franny’s first day on the school running team.  The team meets twice a week, now through the month of October.  They don’t compete, but they can participate in local cross country ‘all-comer’ meets throughout September and October.  Franny isn’t really interested in competing, she just wants to run and not think about winners and losers.  For some reason, she thinks she is slow, but she actually is quite fast!  I told her that in running, she is competing against herself and her last time, but she still wasn’t interested.  And, that’s fine with me—I just think it’s great that she has so much fun with it.  Today they ran around the track, went through an obstacle course, and ran along the forest trail adjacent to the school.  When it was all over, she wanted to go run some more!  It was definitely a great first day!

Chemistry

These three are such an amazing trio.  They never cease to absolutely amaze me with the love they have for each other.  Of course, like all siblings, they do not get along all the time.  But, most of the time they do, and their relationships are getting stronger as time goes by.  Franny and Delaney definitely have a very special sister bond, but it doesn’t come at the expense of Cole.  He and Delaney, as well as he and Franny, have very distinct and special relationships on their own.  And, as they all get older, their relationships evolve and continue to get more complex, but in a good way.  They are three little amazing people, and I can’t imagine living my life without them.

Heat wave

Posted by Trina Rae Monday, September 12, 2011 0 comments

Last week's heat wave caught us all off guard with the hottest temperatures of the summer.  The kids handled the heat amazingly well, doing all the things they usually do, and then some!  They went to the park and fountain, played in the mini-pool, rode the train at the Zoo, and cruised around on their scooters and bikes.  They even had a super fun evening playdate with good friends in West Linn. They didn't miss a beat.  For them, it an incredible extension to summer, which--although informally--ended much too soon with the onset of school last week.  Now, the weather is gradually shifting, and it will be interesting to see if this is the last of our warm weather before the fall cool down begins or if we're able to enjoy one last hurrah of summer.  I know the kids would welcome more summer, but we'll see what happens.

Back to school!

This week, Franny headed back to school.  She had a great week, and is enjoying being in first grade, as well as seeing her old friends.  It has been a much easier adjustment than when she started kindergarten last year.  She is still getting into the new routine, but she is much more at ease, which has made the transition much easier.  She is going to have a terrific year--I am so excited for her!

Top bunk!

Cole has been waiting very patiently for the last year for the day that we assembled the top bunk of his bed.  Yesterday was the day, and he was no less than thrilled!  Last night he fell asleep quickly and had a great night sleep without incident.  It’s fun to see him so excited and proud of his bunk bed—if you ask him where he’s sleeping, he will grin from ear-to-ear, guaranteed!

Biker girl

One of the things I love about visiting Sunriver is riding bikes with Franny.  It is obvious that biking is one of her favorite things to do.  She smiles from ear to ear and there is an enthusiasm and joy about her that I only see when she is exceedingly happy.  She does ride her bike at home and we have gone several bike rides in Portland, but nothing compares to the endless bike trails and beautiful scenery of Sunriver.  It is something that she talks about and looks forward to all year long.  Our time in Sunriver appropriately ended with with one last bike ride.  For Franny, next summer can't get here fast enough!

Shevlin Camp

Last week, we all met Grandma and Grandpa at Shevlin Camp for some real four-wheeling in the beautiful Central Oregon backdrop. It was a special day for everyone--and, even more so because it is place that is very dear to Grandpa. All the kids had a great time riding the four-wheeler (26 miles!), playing hide and seek, and just being together. It had been a number of weeks since the kids had seen Grandma and Grandpa, so they were so happy to see them--there were lots of hugs and smiles. It was a wonderful day, and one that the kids will remember for some time--I know I will.

Delaney and Cole

Posted by Trina Rae Saturday, September 3, 2011 0 comments

Delaney and Cole have enjoyed a number of bike rides in the trailer this week.  Even from several yards behind them, I can hear them giggle, talk to each other, and have a good time.  These two have a very special relationship that is unique to them and it is so fun to see them play and interact.  They really adore each other, and it is very apparent when they are together.  The dynamics and relationships are very different when the three kids are together and when they are in twos.  I love watching these two together--they are very sweet.  Incredibly silly, but very sweet.

Broken Top Trail

Yesterday, we made the tedious drive to the Broken Top No. 10 trailhead. The last five miles of 'road' required four wheel drive and took close to a half an hour to drive. But, it was definitely worth it. We were met by spectacular views, blue skies, and the feeling of peace that can only be found in a special place that has touched your heart and soul. I was thrilled to take the kids on this hike. In total we covered a little over three miles--we hiked through meadows, crossed streams, and were mesmerized by the beauty that surrounded us. This is a very special place, and I will miss it until we are able to return.

Tryon Creek

Last week, Franny attended her last camp of the summer at Tryon Creek State Park. Her group was called Forest Secrets, and they hiked the trails and learned about the plants and animals in the different areas of the park. Unlike her other camps, this was more traditional in the summer camp sense of being in a nature setting; the counselors had special names--Franny's counselor was Sunshine; each day they packed a lunch and snacks, and kept those and everything else they needed in their backpacks. She had a really good time--probably her favorite things were going with her friend, Megan, and getting her face painted. And, of course, singing the Crawdad Song!
