Back to School Night

Tonight we attended Franny's Back to School Night.  Unlike last year, it was for parents only (no kids) and we really got a wonderful glimpse into what Franny is learning, as well as what her daily schedule is like. There are a lot of other differences from kindergarten and 1st grade, which is to be expected. I was surprised to learn that she has her own desk--complete with her books, notebook, work folders, and school supplies box.  This is a shift from last year where everything was shared.  Her routine varied from day to day, but her common subjects are math, phonics, writing, reading, poetry, and thematic studies.  Other specials are art/music, PE on two days, 4th Grade Buddies, and library.  Homework begins next week, and computer lab will begin later in the year. She seems to really be thriving in her new environment.  She is having a lot of fun, seems to be more confident, and according to her teacher, she is quick to participate during reading comprehension discussions.  During kindergarten, Franny was very shy, so this is a big change and one that I am very excited about.   Franny is such an incredible little girl and she amazes me every day.  First grade is going to be a great year for her!
